There is private property within and or next to a lot of public lands. This area is not an exception. Cochise Stronghold East and West are public lands. The East side has nice bouldering and West has great rock climbing. Check Rockclimbing.com or Mountainproject.com for climbing and camping information. This is our public land. It is not reserved for any johnny come lately who owns a postage stamp of land with a double-wide on it. I've visited over decades of time and drove my lowered front wheel drive all the way to the end where the East to West trailhead Westside trailhead is located. Seasonal changes and changes over the years requires scouting on foot with a 2wd low clearance vehicle. My 4wd Ford Escape makes the drive with ease. Cell service varies, hiking up a ridge rewarded me with good enough data to down/up load small files.

Stayed here with a passenger vehicle and a tent. theodore nearing would stay here again.

GPS Led To Private Gated Road

I followed GPS and came to an electric gate that opened, so I went in. There were No Trespassing, Private Property and a sign threatening arrest. I turned around a to leave. Fortunately the electric gate opened on the way out. Too bad, the road was great and it looked like a real nice area.

Stayed here in a Passenger Vehicle. WrongWay2 would not stay here again.

Cochise Stronghold Rd. Not Recommended for 2WD Vehicles

Reviewed December 14, 2017

I don't recommend Cochise Stronghold Rd. for 2WD vehicles. There's a "Road Closed" sign up front and the "road" is mostly sand. I turned around after a mile, which is about all my stomach could take. Also, Horse Ranch Rd. is gated.

Bit of a trip in but so worth it.

Reviewed February 6, 2016

We boondocked here for six nights in late January. Awesome! A few other campers but so spread out we hardly noticed them. Very beautiful with many hiking trails. Highly recommended.
We camped in a 42' fifth wheel toy hauler...not a small rig! Take your time on the road and watch for trees overhead but it is doable and worth it. About nine miles off the highway on Middlemarch Road and then left at the base of the Dragoon Mountains.

Mona Johnston would stay here again.
