Primitive camp on Ammons Branch. From Highlands, follow Main St. east out of town about 4.5 miles through Horse Cove. When pavement ends, bear right on Bull Pen Rd and go 1.5 miles.
A beautiful camping area. Sites are very well spread out and nearby Glen Falls trail is a beautiful hike. Many of the campsites are alongside a stream. Not too far from Highlands.

From Lenoir, NC, take State Rt. 90 west 4 miles to Boone Fork Recreation
Area sign (Mulberry Creek Dr.). Turn right at sign and go 4.5 miles to a Boone
Fork sign (Boone Fork Rd.). Turn right onto Boone Fork Rd. (dirt, single lane)
and go 2 miles to campground
14 sites. no hookups. vault toilets.
Primitive camping along the Fires Creek. Horse camp here with 7 sites. I believe there is some free dispersed camping along this same road near the creek, but currently unable to confirm this. Horse camp rates are $5.

There is a 1 mile interpretive trail. Lots of hiking in the area. Being on the water, it is also a popular spot for boating and fishing.
