Co-operated by the AHRA (Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area) and Colorado State Parks, it also has a river raft launch. It has amazing views, most sites right long the river and is right next to a commercial campground charging $35/night. During river raft season it does get a decent amount of traffic going to/from the launch ramp. We were able to get decent 1XRT Sprint signal and intermittent AT&T Edge signal. Apparently Altel works best in this area.
There are pit toilets by the launch, and the town of Salida offers free (donations encouraged) RV Dump at their chamber of commerce center.
Directions: on Highway 50 between County Road 101 and 102, just east of the wonderful quirky artistic town of Salida. It’ll be just east of the commercil campground. Check out Amica’s Pizza for awesome pizza and microbrew, and Bongo Billy’s for awesome live music and coffee!

The entrance for this site turns directly from a high-speed highway and may be easiest to find when coming out of Salida (traveling East). Look for a small brown sign on the right that says “Bighorn Canyon” and start slowing down. Then watch for a small break in the yellow centerline and that will be your left turn into the site.
This is getting more crowded every year; if it is full there are Forest Service roads with small campsite pullouts N of Salida (Take County Road 175 a few miles past Spiral Drive) and on the way up to Poncha Pass turning off Hwy 285 to County Road 200. There are also moderately priced pay sites administered by AHRA farther East down Bighorn Canyon. Sorry, I don’t have any RV specs for these areas.
Awesome spot. Noisy, but only about a mile and a half from the edge of town. We had two-three bars of Verizon 3G (no booster). I rode my bike to town with my dog running beside me almost daily. We stayed here for 6 days in early September 2011. There were about six other RVs and a couple of tents.
There are lots of recreation opportunities in the area around Salida. White water rafting, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, 4×4 trails, hot springs, jeep tours, pack animal tours, etc.

For pet owners, there is a dog park in on the NW side of town. I also suggest stopping into Gone To The Dogs. It is a dog supply store with premium treats and food whose prices beat out the big box stores. They also have a self serve pet wash area and other services. They call themselves the K-9 Kafe – a place to hang out with your dogs providing FREE WI-FI and FREE “no-thrills” coffee and tea. The Fritz, a local bar, will allow you to have a brew and eat outside with your pet.
This is a real find. Please KEEP YOUR SITE CLEAN and respect the 14day limit. It would be a shame if this spot was closed.
