Opened forest , good for boondocking. Drive 12 miles north of Flagstaff and turn left(west) onto the forest road directly across from the entrance to Sunset Crater National Monument. We just wanted a place to spend the night and only went in about 1/4 mile before we found a good spot but this forest warrants a better look. The dirt road is in very good shape and there is good spacing between the trees with fairly level terrain. Looking at Google Earth , it appears that there are a couple of quarries down this road. A few trucks did pass by us but other than that it was quiet. Most of the highway noise was blocked by a hill along the highway.

We camped 2 nights in a tent at the official Coconino campsites run by the parks department. They were in the $15-20 per night range, but were very nice. Nice toilets (although no running water), very friendly staff, beautiful and somewhat private sites, open fires permitted. Would definitely stay there again.
