View of Tucson from atop the Santa Catalina mountains. Lots of 4×4 traffic and gun shots. There are tons of 4×4 trails on this road. There is also a shooting range further up the road. Excellent Sprint Evdo Internet connection. The view of Tucson at night is to die for. Stayed for 3 days.
There are more sites all along the road. No facilities.
This is a mountain road, but it is maintained. Its seems to be three lanes wide in many places, but always at least two lanes. Small trailers shouldn’t be an issue. I saw lots of folks hauling their toys up the mountain on trailers.
Pets:
Personally, there is so much traffic on Redington, that would be extra mindful of my dog. The forest says: “Pets must be restrained or on a leash at all times while in developed recreation areas. Pets (except guide dogs) are not allowed in swimming areas or sanitary facilities. Saddle or pack animals are allowed only where authorized by posted instructions. Before you take your dog camping or picnicking, please read our Dog FAQ.” Even if you don’t have a pet, I suggest reading the FAQ. The writer is a ummm snide.. no, that’s not the word. Hmmmm well you’ll see.

FYI: Couldn’t get internet connection so don’t be surprised if you can’t.
Yes, I should have clarified. We had an excellent connection through our Sprint EVDO service. There isn’t any free wifi up in these mountains.
Appreciate the info. Be aware, however, that as I write this in Nov of 2010, the Redington Pass road is extremely rough and washboarded once you get past the pavement. It’s also fairly steep in places. You could probably get a motorhome or travel trailer up there, but it wouldn’t be an especially pleasant trip.
I’ve slept here the past three nights, and will stay at least 3 more. There is a bathroom around mile 12, I believe. I drove out here in an old RWD truck, but saw others driving small cars, the road is rough but easy if you’re careful. There are more and more campsites as you go farther into the property, with a few really nice hiking trails. Best free camping to my knowledge in the Tucson area.
Wonderful view, great location. BUT, if you are looking for a remote, quiet location THIS IS NOT IT! There was constant car traffic, usually recless driving up the mountain and a lot of gun shots (some sounding more like canons) because there is free shooting on National Forest Land. Although beautiful, there was a lot of trash which was dissapointing. We stayed only two days.
Cell Reception: Verizon, I lost a few calls. Bars kept going up and down. ATT, great cell cervice, 3G and good phone internet.
I thought it was too noisy. But it did have a great view and the sunsets where beautiful.
What are the directions to this camp site? Or where can I figure out how to get there? Thanks!
Directions via google maps – The campsites along this road and at this location are just pull offs, you will not find any picnic tables or facilities. Just look for a spot set off the road that is large enough for your vehicle. The road up can be rough. Also, there is currently a winter weather advisory so I advise against going up there right now.
