The El Caso Campgounds are partially developed campgrounds located at the east end of Quemado Lake. They are nestled in a valley stretching alongside an intermittent stream and are surrounded by ponderosa pine and cottonwood trees which offer more shade than the other campgrounds in the recreation area. The El Caso campgrounds are popular with hunters, groups, and campers desiring a more primitive camping experience than that offered in our fee sites.
General Notes
ATVs generally are allowed on the Forest but they must be licensed and users must follow all state laws regarding use. ATV use is not allowed in Quemado Lake Recreation Area.
Closest Stores:
Snuffy\’s is located west of Quemado Lake. It offers a small general store, hunting and fishing license sales, a restaurant, and liquor sales.
Tent Camping Notes
There are no developed tent pads.
RV Camping Notes
There are no RV specific sites but many sites are suitable for self contained RV camping. The nearest dump station is at PiƱon Campground (May 1 to September 30). Dump fee is $5.00.
Area Activities
Boating
Approximately 2 miles from the boat launch at the Quemado Lake spillway.
Only boats with oars or electic motors are permitted on Quemado Lake.
Fishing
Near Quemado Lake.
Hiking
Largo trailhead (Trail number 14) is at the west side of the campground. Largo trail connects with other trails in the recreation area.
Horse Riding
Adjacent to El Caso Throwdown. Horses are not allowed in the recreation area.
Hunting
Hunting is not allowed in the recreation area. El Caso campgrounds are open year round and are popular with hunters for base camp use.
Scenic Drives
Slaughter Mesa Scenic Loop. Go east from the lake on FR 13 approximately 10 miles to Slaughter Mesa and continue on approximately 7 more miles to FR 214. At this point you can go north approximately 10 miles to the old town of Mangas and then 12 more miles to US 60. You can also go south on FR 214 for approximately 11 miles to NM 12. This road is rough. An alternate route from Slaughter Mesa is to go west on FR 93 for approximately 18 miles to NM 32.
Wildlife Watching
Take Largo Trail # 14 to the east end of Quemado Lake and the Lakeshore Trail around the lake.
