Pianotuna is the man to ask about solar (see the solar boondocking thread). We're planning to get some paels this winter, but for the last year and half, we've managed pretty well with a honda eu2000i and about 4.5 gallons of gas in jerry cans. Typically, this lasts longer than the 14 day limit in an area.

For us, 14 days is about right as we're ready to move on (even if only a few miles down the road) and see something new. Some of the southwestern states do have long term visitor policies, though. Arizona allows you to stay for, I believe, 7 months at a time if you buy a long term visitor's permit. I don't know the cost of these off the top of my head, but they are very reasonable if you are actually going to be staying anywhere near 7 months in one state.
