Hi all,

The $1.00 per watt barrier for solar has been broken–at least for the moment!

I've been watching these guys for a while now. I'm hoping they'll sell panels out of their Phoenix office since we'll be in that area soon. They won't ship less than 2 panels due to breakage and I'm not sure Jenn and I really need 400+ watts.

edit: actually, I'd been watching the SUN panels (~1.75/watt range). The kaneka's really make a cheap solar install look like it'll happen this winter since we already have a charge controller. I wonder how durable they are compared to more main stream panels.

Hi Johnny,

What charge controller do you have? What input voltage will it accept? If there is room on the roof for 400 watts, I'd do it in a flash.

If you want the ultimate in toughness look at Uni-Solar. No glass. No frame. But about quadruple the price of the Kaneka.

Yah know, its been so long, I don't remember if its the Blue Sky 2000 or 2512. But, it's a 25 amp MPPT controller. The kanekas are kind of big per watt compared to the sun/evergreen panels. I can definitely get 240 watts in the area I was planning for though, which is about all I want. Our power usage is fairly good after spending a year and a half w/ the little honda =)

I got so used to thinking we'd go either 12V or 24V because of the MPPT controller that I didn't even pay attention to the voltage rating on the Kaneka's. After recommending them to our neighbor at Slab City, I decided I better read up in case he wanted to road trip to Phoenix.

Sadly, they are 48V… well beyond what our controller will handle. the SUN modules in their 200W+ incarnation are still looking like the way to go for us. Not quite worth a 400 mile round trip to pick up and come back though. Well, maybe if someone else wants to drive!
