We have been hoping for a site like this where a database of information about good places to dry camp (boondock) could be formed however most RVrs know you can park at Walmart or rest areas, for the love of god stop posting those here. I would like to find beautiful places in which to camp, not truck stops and casinos!
Don't let this site become like the countless others that allow this.

Hi nwjeeper,
I suspect you may find rest areas and some Casinos–but no Walmarts, K Marts, Truck Stops or Home Depots. (Or at least very few).
I hope you will share the sites you may have already found!

Pianotuna,
I did submit two of our favorite sites and will put up more. I have however found more rest areas, casinos and home depots listed for our state (WA) than nice free camping areas like I have submitted. As for some of the other areas listed some tend to be very vague with the same description for 3 different areas which makes me wonder if anyone is actually weeding out anything.
It has always made me wonder when we have been on the road what kind of free and really nice camping areas are available along our route that we don't know about because we are not local. I know many people don't know of the two I have listed but they are great places for short or extended stays.
I had contemplated starting a site like this but have one of my own that is enough work to deal with. If it were up to me there would be absolutely no casinos, rest areas, Home Depots, Walmarts, etc. listed.

Hi nwjeeper,
I'm glad someone else feels as I do–I'd rather there were no Walmarts (there aren't here btw). I don't object to rest areas because I would only use them if no other location were avaliable near to where I wish to stay the night.
This will happen on a trip I'll be making in June where the best place to stay on the first night happens to be a rest area in North Dakota.
It is one I've stopped at before–but I've never overnighted in it.
I've never stayed at a Casino–but there are folks who do appreciate that sort of "camping". I suppose I might boondock at a Casino, but again only if nothing else were availalble where I need to stop.
I have stayed at a small rural airport–not one with regular service. It was lovely–nearly abandoned and I was able to use some power (with permission).

Thank you for your two cents, which together with mine makes two of us. I’ve been a pestering the Administration over diluting the site with unfortunate guesses, over night sleepover spots, etc. Pestering to the point where I rarely get a reply. I guess I need to take the hint…
I thought the original idea of boondock "CAMPING" was very exciting, but evidently I misinterpreted the goal. It seems like we are after sheer numbers, not sheer quality. What I was told probably applies to you too, "Please feel free to read descriptions of campsites and simply ignore things that don't interest you."

I do believe this would all be solved if I would get off my butt and implement the map toggle feature. That way, you would only see what you are interested in. It would allow you to "turn off" the display of rest areas, retail stores, etc. Don't you agree?
Personally, I have never stayed at a casino nor a rest area, but if they were the only things available in the area, I would be grateful for them. That is why I have allowed them to be included. The main purpose of this site is to help you (and me) find a place to stay the night without having to go to 5245245 different websites. I left in the "less desirable" sites in anticipation of the toggle feature.
As for unknowns, isn't everything? I mean if you haven't been somewhere its unknown to you, right? Just because someone posted something here with a write up doesn't mean you wont get fined or rousted in the middle of the night. While I do see every single submission, I do not always verify the information (sometimes I do). Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you are looking for 100% verified sites, I suggest you use one of the pay sites or order a book. This website is a free public forum and a hobby. I try to research everything I add (and stay at), but that doesn't mean everyone else does.
I do appreciate all of your feedback and submissions. I know I need to get busy on adding some features. I have been promising map toggling (and search page) for a while. At the moment, most of my time is spent trying to figure out where the heck I am going to sleep, who has the cheapest fuel, etc. We have been putting in a lot of miles lately. We are heading up to your neck of the states nwjeeper. We plan to sit there for a couple of weeks while we wait for our passports to come in. The squatting should allow me to put more time into the site.
Cheers,
jenn

Jenn: I understand completely. I run a site myself (as well as administer to 2 others) and have recently spent the last 3 weeks re-designing and updating my own so I know it is a lot of work. I also did not say anything about the sites being verified. I know you couldn't do that but at least we could do without all the casino and truck stop listings. I have seen so many other web sites that do that and I have just passed them all by because all of that is information you can find with just a google search online. I can find a casino for cyring out loud, they're everywere now, what I want is a scenic or othewise private and quiet place to dry camp and there is literally 1000s of those kind of places out there.
PianoTuna: I could do without the rest areas as they are listed on maps and therefore not really necessary on a site like this. I would love to see however sites like the two I listed here in WA that are in beautiful settings near a stream or lake where one can either overnight or set up camp, throw out the chairs and awning and stay a while. I don't see parking lots and rest areas as this type of place.
We too used to stay at airports when I was a kid like you mentioned. As we were really in to aviation (my dad was a pilot and I became one too when I was of legal age to do so) it was always a great time. However since 9/11 I have been very uneasy about hanging around airports. As an employee of the FAA I know that the TSA is very suspicious of any and all activities around airports now, even small ones. I more than likely would not pull into or near one anymore to camp even for a night. I see the paranoia on a daily basis when it comes to all forms of aviation. I suppose if you had the permission of the airport manager it would be different however.
I will get to putting a few more places that I know of near home that may be useful for others.
Cheers….

My Bad, I just posted a Wal-Mart site submission. Sorry if it irritates some folk. However, sometimes it's really, REALLY hard to find a spot to just park for a night till you can get your bearings and some sleep when you have been on the road for 10 hours.
I see that the submission form has collected the types of locations, so it shouldn't be an issue once Hitek implements a sort feature. But I am one of those people who at various times has had to hone their urban-survival skills and knowing where I could just find a parking spot where I wouldn't be hassled for a night is a godsend.
If I can co-ordinate the dates of my photos and logs with my ancient Magellan GPS waypoint dates, I will post a string of more scenic spots from Seattle to Montana along highway 12 (southern route) and various highways along the northern high line in the future.

Hi,
Is there an online map that lists rest areas?

Hi Bob,
I agree on the places such as Walmarts. I'd rather not have commercial parking lots listed. Jenn's idea of a toggle would be great! (so long as display all would be the default setting).

Just about any road atlas you can buy at the store also most GPSs, Microsoft Streets and Trips, etc. list rest areas. There just is no need to list them here in my opinion

Hi njweeper,
I guess the roads I travel are not updated–for often I happen across a rest area that is *not* listed–and then again sometimes one that *is* listed does not exist!
