There are some terrific, pure boondocking location back the Gros Ventre Road just east of Grand Teton Natl. Park. (Locally pronounced: “Grow Vaunt”)One of the most beautiful roads in all of Wyoming, which penetrates some 30 miles into the wilds! It is a destination unto itself! It is not a place to stay for day trips back to Grand Teton/Yellowstone Nat’l Parks.
The road is well-maintained gravel, with some wash boarding, and a bit of a drive to get back to the National Park or the town of Jackson. Although the road is well traveled there are NO SERVICES! You are in wild Wyoming! A favorite boondocking area by Jackson Hole residents and ranchers! Slide Lake, the Gros Ventre River and Crystal Creek have good trout fishing. There are lots of OHV trails and pure wilderness access! Hiking is just plain terrific! This is all US Forest Svc public land with the exception of some well marked private ranches.
There are two, no fee, boondock areas right next to the Crystal Creek & Red Hills US Forest Svc campgrounds, which are small, fee campgrounds adjacent to each other on the banks river or creek. These campgrounds have small pads, tables, fire pits and pit toilets. The fee at the campgrounds is 50% off with a Federal Golden Eagle Passport, etc. so about $6/night.
The first boondock area is very spacious, on dirt pads, is to the south of the road and marked as “overflow. It works for horses, off highway vehicles and groups. The other is just to the east, more rugged dirt access and not for big rigs. As with any boondocking in Wyoming – unhitch and check it out before you enter! You can easily get rimrocked!
There are dozens of other fantastic boondock locations as you continue east on the Gros Ventre Rd, but you are cautioned to scout the little side roads out w/o your trailer, etc. Some are next to the river, some well above. Most are hunting camps in the fall. All have fantastic! Under no circumstances – DO NOT try towing back to the Crystal Creek Trail Head! This is 4×4, rough road only. Even hunting outfitters won’t tow horse trailers back there!
