Dry camping on BLM land in Safford District. $3/Day (or $30/year) per vehicle use fee. No additional charge for vehicles in tow. Fee covers camping, day use, OHV use, access to hot springs and facilities. Daily fee is collected on site. The annual BLM permit must be obtained from the Safford BLM office. All America the Beautiful Passes, including the Annual, Senior and Access Passes are honored at this site.
The big draws here are the OHV area (2,000-acres of rolling sand dunes) and the hot springs (no nudity allowed). Call ahead to see if the tubs have a good flow.
The Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area is located approximately 35 miles from Safford (the nearest city with all services including hospital). The area is generally accessible by all types of vehicles but the road can get rough at times, so be prepared to take it slow. Once at the site be aware there is no electricity, drinking water or phones available. Also if you plan on having a fire we encourage you to bring your own wood due to a very limited amount available on site.
Most use at this site occurs during the fall, winter and spring when the temperatures are pleasant. OHV use can be heavy on weekends during this time, especially holiday weekends. Summers are extremely hot.
There are campsites that have a picnic table and campfire ring, but if you don’t need these amenities feel free to pick any undeveloped spot that meets your needs (excluding the parking areas and vicinity immediately around the tubs and wildlife viewing ponds).

More free camping in Arizona.
We recommend that once you locate a suitable camping location on our website, you do additional research to confirm that it is still open, the correct location, and free or less than $11 prior to driving there. In most cases, we provide the current contact information in the entry for each campsite. We make every effort to be up to date and accurate, but with number of campsites we have to keep up with, there may be some discrepancies. Thank you again for your contributions. Please let us know if you encounter any items that need to updated.
