One of the best winter free camping sites i know of!! in Georgia!!
This is the nicest free campground in the Cohutta Mountains, but there are only 5 or 6 campsites, so on weekends during high camping season, you may need to be there by mid-day Friday to get a site. Other than being on beautiful Mill Creek, and only a 20 minute hike from Mill Creek Falls, it is also near Lake Conasauga and the Hickory Creek Trailhead. This campground rocks.
Hickey Gap in N. Ga. out of Eton. Halfway up the Mtn. to Lake Conasauga. 5 free nice sites w/ tent pad, lantern pole, metal fire ring and new toilet pit. Alongside a stream for fishing, wading, and a short walk to a falls and swimming area. Some have seen a bear or two in camp, but the several weeks I’ve spent there on and off, have not seen a bear. 36.059749, -81.750000
6.8 miles of 5 to 15 mile an hour road, yeah, can get a little rough, have seen traces of small cars knocking holes in the oil pan, take it slow and easy.
Nice campground, 7 miles of rough road but not too bad. Nice creek and swimming hole. Lot of drive up traffic from day trippers wanting to go swimming. Really enjoyed my time there.
