Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area is located in Southwest Virginia’s Washington County, and is bordered by Russell County along the area’s northwest boundary. This 6,400-acre property is mostly forested mountain land with the exception of a number of small openings, developed and maintained to enhance wildlife habitat. Two thousand feet at its lowest elevation, the area’s highest elevation exceeds 4,000 feet, indicating the rugged steepness of the area. Logged in the early 1900s when much of the area was virgin forest, the predominate forest is now mature, mixed hardwood. Hidden Valley Lake is situated at the head of the valley, from which flows Brumley Creek.
Directions
Access to the area is from U.S. Route 19, between Abingdon and Lebanon, on State Route 690. Consult map for greater detail.
New Rules for Virginia WMAs
As of Jan 1, 2012, all Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries areas — pretty much any state WMA area — now requires either a valid VA (or non-resident VA) hunting license, fishing license, VA boat registration, or a paid Access Permit (daily, yearly, or group) to set foot on DGIF WMA lands. Waivers are only for those on official federal, state, or local government business, visiting graves, those 16 and younger, and those assisting disabled hunters who possess valid disabled hunter licenses. If you’re simply passing through via road, river, or the Appalachian Trail, you don’t need a pass, either.
Basically, all campsites in Virginia under the Fish and Wildlife category now cost a minimum of $4 per day for a day pass, $23 for a yearly pass, or one of the above licenses/waivers. Saltwater fishing licenses aren’t valid. (EDIT: freshwater licenses are $23/yr for residents). Learn more about the Access Permit »

I am from this area. This is a beautiful site but the road (paved until you get to the top) is very steep so be prepared for a climb and low gears on bigger vehicles when coming off! Great campsites right at the beautiful man made lake and shady. Check trees well for rotted limbs before sitting up as storms can blow up and you are very high here. Forestry service keeps it clean/mowed/tended but ya never know! There is NO FRESH WATER available (unless it was added in the past two years) and a porta potty that can be rank if a lot of people are there. This area is well known to locals and may get crowded on holiday weekends and can be noisy from partiers on weekends/holidays. The Washington County Sheffirfs Dept. cruises thru a couple of times a day and there is a “caretaker” that empty’s garbage and replisishes trashbags and TP (but taking your own is advised) and keeps an eye on things but does not intervene much except to call for hepl if needed. Cell phones may or may not work according to provider that you use but this mountain has many cell towers on it!
If you like boondocking this is the place! Take what you need as it is pretty far to a store of any kind but there is a small country store back toward Abingdon on Rt. 19 and a larger convience store about 2 miles toward Lebanon with bait, food and about anything you could want/need. Abingdon has a K-Mart/grocery etc off Exit 17 and Exit 19 near Bristol (5-6 miles from Abingdon on the TN line) has super WalMart and any and every other store/resturant and other that you could possibly want/need. Lebanon is pretty far away. Abingdon/Bristol is closest for needs.
VERY beautiful place with lots of wildlife/trails and nature. This part of VA has many other areas/lakes/ History to see and lakes/waterfalls etc. Just ask a local!
