CAMP ONLY IN DESIGNATED PLACES!!!
A popular boondocking area near the Needles District of Canyonlands Natl Park. Get there early if you can, especially on weekends and holidays. From the highway to the stream crossing you’ll find dozens of user made boondock sites. Don’t go any further than the steam crossing, unless you check it out first. Past the stream may be ok for your pickup camper, but it gets “tight”! There is a wonderful waterfall to the west of the crossing. Some sites have spectacular views; some are sheltered below rock rims.
Very popular with off highway & 4×4 vehicle users. Nice bicycling along the road. Good place for dogs.
The Needles District of the National Park is my favorite! Don’t miss it!!! Also Newspaper Rock ancient Indian rock art site. The Needles Outpost nearer the Nat’l Park has a nice fee based campground, limited services and wonderful hamburgers! The Park Svc campgrounds are very nice, but charge the usual fees.
Also along the road are two free BLM campgrounds with pit toilets, fire rings and tables. The first is Hamburger Rock, which children will love! The second is in the dry creek/Cottonwood bottom, which isn’t my favorite.

We tried to boondock here according to the advice above. It is beautiful, and there are lots of spots to boondock as stated….. but not for a good sized class A. As far as not going past the stream crossing….. there is more than one, so we were very confused. We never found any “hamburger Rock” camping area with sites and tables as stated. We saw “Newspaper Rock”…. which is really cool, but no room for camping in RV. Im sure the BLM marked sites are there somewhere, but it is not marked where its easy to find, as we drove almost 40 miles into this area before we could find a place to even attempt to turn around. If you have a small “Class C” RV, a truck camper, van, or tent….. this place is paradise……. and you will find plenty of spots to set up. If you have a big rig, or even a medium sized “Class A” Rig, dont attempt it. We used a half tank of gas chugging up the steep curvy roads looking for somewhere to set up and found nothing for our size. We had to drive into Monticello, about 14 miles down the highway to a RV Park set-up in someones front yard. We then unhooked our car and drove back into the Canyonlands to explore.
Whoops, you obviously missed the Lockhart Rd. – TOTALLY & COMPLETELY!!! Like many things in southern Utah it isn’t all that well marked. I wish you’d have been following a GPS cause it is clear on one. Anyway, must have been a tough afternoon! Been there, done that!
I double-checked the map above and it is correct. One thing for sure is if you take off on a wrong road out here you may be heading into trouble – deep trouble! The bigger the rig the deep the trouble!
We were there in April too, and we’ve camper here dozens of times. There were ten or twelve huge “bus” sized rigs, all towing cars, camped at or b4 you get to Hamburger Rock. There are any number of places to turn around, even the biggest rig, on the paved highway (211) leading to the Needles Dist. of Canyonlands Nat’l. Park. There is also a fine Park Svc campground in the Needles Nat’l Park and a private one at the Needles Outpost just as you enter the park. Too bad you didn’t see these as they are the next best thing to boondocking.
On the Lockhart Rd. there is only one stream crossing, not several, so where you were I have not a clue. The Lockhart Rd crossing is about a mile past the BLM Hamburger Rock Camp Area. Don’t go past the stream with anything other than a tent or pickup camper!
If you are of such a mind I’d sure like to see you try it again!
I’m afraid I’m confused, also. Are you referring to the access road that leads from highway 191 into the Needles Section of Canyonlands National Park? If so, boondocking is no longer allowed along Indian Creek, in the area near Newspaper Rock. There is no other BLM campground on that road that I know of. I’ve been to Canyonlands more times than I have fingers to count, and I guess I’m still confused about where you mean.
There is the Hart’s Draw loop road, which branches off the Park access road roughly halfway to the Park from highway 191. It’s a paved road that leads up into the National Forest and eventually back to Monticello. You can find a few boondocking sites along that road. It’s nice and cool up there in the summer.
I don’t know how I can make it clearer except to say it is way past NewsPaper Rock and a mile or so east of the Needles District. Expand the map. It is NORTH of UT 211. Believe me and hundreds of others – IT IS EXACTLY WHERE SHOWN!
Zoom in on the Satt View, and you can see rigs camped all along there!
Yup. I see them. You have to zoom in in satellite mode and follow the road north. They aren’t bunched together. They are spread out all along the road. Can’t wait to visit this spot. Thanks, doBob!
