Mortimer campground is nice but the long narrow dirt road getting there is horrible. It is full of traffic with people driving in and out. It is hard to pass the on-coming traffic. If its dry the dust gets into everything. The roads is rough in some places.
The campground has been improved w/ the showers, but the back loop still draws the “moonshiner” crowd on weekends. The campsite hosts that we have had the past few years wink and nod at all the drinking going on but were friendly. I have learned not to stay in the back loop on weekends if I want a nice camping experience w/ family.
Thorps creek has a nice waterfall and several constructed trout pools from Trout Unlimited but the fish are scarce in summer.
The road in( Brown Mountain beach rd) can be crowded but if you know your way around, there are other less-crowded ways to get to mortimer (Hwy 90 is one way) but they might take longer…
All in all it’s hard to beat this place for the money but just know it’s very popular nowadays especially in the summer.
