[...] most of the day yesterday packing up camp, getting provisions and driving to our current location: Quartzsite. We stopping in last year but had missed all of the hoorah. This year, we were boondocking near by [...]
Dome rock area is on Dome Road, both sides. There is a different name in quartzsite that changes to dome rock road before you get to the blm land.
Pomosa BLM is flat and was crowded near the road when I was there last week. Dome rock road is more hilly and interesting, and the terain does not allow such dense packing. Both areas want you to get a free permit. Status should be official.
Spent some time on dome rock very nice if your into hiking and exploring as well as seclusion, most of the other areas are flat and packed there are some trees at scadden wash on the east side of town, Quartzsite is full of life in dec jan and april after that it because a living ghost town.
Got here in January and miles 0-4 were fairly crowded. Past mm 10 campers got sparser. Around 11.8 there are two 14-day areas. To the left (west) is washy, but with varied and interesting campsites and few campers. This is better for a small RV or a truck camper, but we did it in a big class A, so it’s doable. Prepare for Arizona pinstriping. No reliable phone signal here.
To the right is flatter, more open camping. I don’t know about signal here.
By the beginning of February the crowds everywhere were thinning, and we moved into an area near mm1. Very sparsely populated. Learned that there is a camphost for this area about two miles away. If you don’t check in, BLM assumes you’ve been here forever and rousts you (they haven’t really kept track, they’re just basing it on your lack of sticker). So, go ahead and register. This area is easy to get into, even for very big rigs, and is very level. Excellent phone signal (Verizon).
