Beautiful, vast boondocking area East of the town of Jefferson, CO, on the way to Tarryall Reservoir. The road is just fine for larger RVs and you can go pretty far back in the forest safely. We were there during a downpour and the roads were still fine.
No water in Jefferson, so stock up beforehand. Lots of campsites with firerings already there, and insane views. On the weekends it gets busy with OHVers and hunters, so if that’s not your thing, visit on weekdays. Otherwise one of the all time best boondocking areas we’ve been to.
Take Hwy 287 to Jefferson (toward Fairplay). Head East on County Road 77, travel about 8 miles past ranches and rocks, then at the top of the crest turn left onto CR 39, which turns into FR 39. National forest begins about 2 miles off CR 77.

More free camping in Colorado.
We recommend that once you locate a suitable camping location on our website, you do additional research to confirm that it is still open, the correct location, and free or less than $11 prior to driving there. In most cases, we provide the current contact information in the entry for each campsite. We make every effort to be up to date and accurate, but with number of campsites we have to keep up with, there may be some discrepancies. Thank you again for your contributions. Please let us know if you encounter any items that need to updated.
