Canon City runs a great park here that allows free camping for up to 72 hours.
Fairly steep gravel road narrow in places, but should be no trouble for most rigs.
After Canon City, you will turn left off highway 50 to go toward the Royal Gorge Bridge. There’s currently no sign for Buckskin Joe’s indicating it’s on that road. Turn there anyways.
When you see Joe’s on the right side, you’ll pass a big driveway with an entrance and an exit. Keep going. There is a THIRD driveway down the road about a half mile or so. That is where you’ll turn onto the gravel road to the park. There is no sign. It is almost exactly across the road from the last entrance to Joe’s. Can’t miss it.
The road sucks. Just keep taking it up toward the top of the ridge. At your first fork just after you turn onto it, stay right (there’s a locked gate to the left). Afterward, stay left the whole time. You’ll see the park start to rise up a bit when you get to then last fork, and some picnic tables and an outhouse will be up ahead toward your left. There is no sign saying “campsites this way.” So veer left! DO NOT go right and up the hill at that fork! There is a big sign saying “No Vehicles past this point” and a dead end, but you’ll see it WAY too late. We had to back our 24′ 5er all the way back down the steep hill, with steep ditches on both sides. A nightmare.
Once you make it up top the reward is very worthwhile. But there is no water here, and the outhouse is gross, so be sure to top off in Canon City before you arrive. Otherwise, an awesome place with incredible views of Canon City and the Royal Gorge.
