Super easy to find and right outside the park. Camping within the park is dry too- so in terms of expense- staying here will keep yours down. We were here in late January- only three other vehicles were visible. Backpackig within Joshua Tree is free- you don't even need a permit. So if you like backpackig- this was a beautiful place to be. Hard to have enough water- might want to plant water for the 35 mile hike if you do it!

I mostly agree, but there are many places to camp -- you can go miles on the dirt roads if you prefer more isolation. Picture in my blog article at http://techno-viking.com/posts/mwd/

Lots of space here on both sides of Cottonwood Springs Road. I-10 is sort of close but the noise stays pretty low and it can be nice to just watch the world pass by in a way. We stayed three weeks and never had anyone close to us.

Indio is relatively close for shopping and drinking water is available just a few miles up the road at the Cottonwood Visitor Center. Cottonwood CG was closed due to a flood so no dump or tank fill available
