The Tailwater campground is a 48-site area located along the Barren River, just below the dam. The cool water provides fishing for catfish, hybrid striped bass, and rainbow trout when stocked. A control station regulates access and the main campground road is paved. Electric and water are available at individual sites, and there is 1 pit-type restrooms and showerhouse in the area. The campground is open year round. Controlled access and fee collection is from mid-April through mid-September. From Glasgow, KY: Take 31-E south for 4 mi; turn right on 252, which will cross the dam in 8 mi. The Tailwater entrance road is at the south end of the dam. Follow signs into recreation area. Approximately 19 miles from Bowling Green, KY.

This is a wonderful campground. There is no water to the sites in winter, but a hydrant where you can get water in jugs. It is only free during the winter–otherwise, like April 14ths, it’s like $17 per nite. We are headed there tomorrow, 4/6/2010 to use it til it’s no longer free. Gorgous time of year to visit KY.
The army corps of engineers have extended the free season this year–it’s free thru April 29th, and begins the day after Labor Day—this is wonderful–just wanted to share this info!
Hi,
This gps may be more accurate.

I stayed here this past weekend and the campground is very nice, however all of the water was turned off and that was very inconvenient. If you camp near the dam, the noise from the dam is bad but there are plenty of places to camp farther from the noise. Someone needs to create a google earth file that contains all of these campsites so they can be put on our gps. Robb
Well I was very pleased to see that this was a free campsite, except for the fact that after spending $100 bucks on the trip down, come to find out that it is ONLY free in the winter.
My family and I found this campsite two weeks ago. We have gone two weeks in a row and love it. This is not far from Mamouth Cave and Horse Cave. There is plenty to do in the area and the campsite its self is very beautiful and well worth it. Just a warning though is once you turn off on 252 to head back to the campsite it is really far and you will feel like you are lost, just keep going. When you get there the view is well worth it. As you approach the campsite you come from the top of the dam and have a over view of the Barren river lake and of the entire campsite.
Very nice place to camp, but showers were closed and locked when I visited during the off season. Bathrooms were clean and had TP. Electricity was available at the campsites, but no cell signal.
Found this camp site from this web site. We spent the week of 3-24-31,2012 there. Your expectation need to be correct on what you get for “free”. It is a class-A camp ground with all the admentities described in the write up. However, it is only free in the “Closed” season. Closed means Closed. There is not water at the site spicgots. There is no power at the site poles. The main shower house and flush toilets are locked and closed. There is a set of pit toilets at the far end of the campground, and another in the day use area of the picnic area. If you want to use a flush facility there is an open one near the main lake boat ramp at Port Oliver (right across the road on the other side of the dam) Don’t expect the taxpayer to pay for your full hook-ups and free electric. When these services are turned on, the rate on the entrance post is $18.00 per night. Call the corps for dates, very friendly.
A few other items, local fishermen come in every day and stay late. So the place never felt abandoned. This also leads to many cars and trucks using the road through the camp ground. Most were gone by 10:00pm but a few Yahoo’s felt the need to tear out of there at 11:00 or 12:00pm. (happened once).
Had a great time. Sites very level and nice though a little close if actually full.
One final thing. If you cannot camp without electricity and have a noisy generator stay home!!! Do not spoil the peace and quiet of this natural area for those of us who actually camp, with your lawn mower sounding generator so you can watch TV. And, Yes I hope I make some of you mad, it is a special tallent.
