Free dry camping just off Highway 86 and S San Joaquin Rd. This is a little patch of BLM in the middle of major development. Nicer than you might expect. Desert trees and a picturesque rocky hillside.

Not Safe

Don’t recommend if you have kids or concerned with safety. We arrived and saw multiple broken down campers and what looked to be homeless camps decided to play it safe and leave due to having kids with us. Also saw multiple beer cans all around hill and posted signs to not shoot weapons (signs just don’t show up unless there is a issue!).

if one needs an overnight stop

I stopped after a day at PIMA while on my way to Organ Pipe National. My spot was on the west side, closest group was about 100yrds, no issues and quiet - after about 9 or 10 I didn't hear highway noise. I likely wouldn't stay longer, but I would stop here again.

No Thanks

Arrived on a Monday around noon and this place was is pretty bad shape. Garbage everywhere (piles of trash bags, someone dropped off a big screen tv (old style that weights probably 200lbs) and just other junk. Looked like a few of the "campers" were more like squatters. Road noise is significant, broken glass and rutted roads throughout. Sure this is convient if you are wanting to visit Saguaro NP but there are far better options north of the park.

Seems safe but lock your stuff
This is a great free place to stay near the city of Tucson. We were here March 14 and 15. Beware of theft! Someone tried to unstrap and steal our bicycles in the night. Fortunately we had a cable lock holding them to the rack. We did not notice until we started driving and they fell off the rack.

Not exactly what I expected

This is a crowded campsite! I was here in Dec. 2020. There was still space to camp but there was glass everywhere so we decided to find another spot. This is not the spot for you if you want to feel like you're in nature. It is right off the road so it isn't too quiet and expects to have neighbors.

We stayed here two weeks in November/December 2020. Back again in March 2021. 2021 reflects quite a negative change from our previous visit! Some of the campers have been here for months, well beyond the two week max, taking advantage of the Corona virus to ignore regulations and overstay on the BLM. We understand a few days or weeks, but do you guys have to stay the entire season? During our second visit, the place is completely packed with campers and RVs. Loud generators abound and cell data is overloaded. There are even strangers coming up to our RV. You are not getting one over. You're ruining the beautiful area for the rest of us. Time for a ranger visit...

Good for close to city

We stayed for 3 nights while we took care of some business in Tucson. Nice to have a place close to town. Plenty of room even with lots of people around. Some road noise, but to be expected near the city. Quite a bit of trash but you can tell some people are trying to keep it clean. Easy in and out for our 40 foot fifth wheel.

BLM camping outside of Tucson.

The area was easy to get too. Its right next to a main road so there is road noise but its not to bad. Next time I will camp south of hwy 86. It looks like a nice wide open area. Over all not a bad place to camp.

Got here pretty late at night, didn't see most of the sites, but we stayed just off an intersection where there was a pulloff and camping marker directly off the road. No problem parking a Honda fit off the road, but a few of the other dirt roads to sites appeared to be pretty rough, don't know if my car would have made it. Wasn't busy, only saw a few other campers. The proximity to the road and civilizations means there is a lot of traffic, heard that all night and day.
Worked remotely here, Verizon had a good signal, was getting 30-40mbps down/5-10mbps up. AT&T had a good signal as well.

Enjoyed our stay

Snyder Hill was extremely rough getting into, but if you take it slow and pay attention it is worth the stay. We took our 40 ft 5th wheel and stayed for 5 nights. Great access to Tuscon. It was not a remote area, lots of other campers( of all kinds, class A, Van's, cars, tents, tt and 5th wheels). Be self contained, remember you are on free BLM land

Good place to home base in the Tuscon arra

Snyder Hill has many spots on BLM to camp on, on both sides of the hill. All the entrances we found were pretty rough. We have a 41 ft toy hauler and went in and out fine, you just need to go very slow and I recommend not trying it at night. Lots of campers, seemed like a popular spot, none too close though. Plenty of land around. Some nomad travelers in their cars, maybe homeless, maybe not. They people we spoke with, both in campers and in their cars were very welcoming and friendly. We stayed 4 nights.

BLM land being used as an RV park - lots of RVs in a small area.

Traveling through Tucson during the Gem and Mineral show (no vacancy at any RV park) in late January 2020. Found this listed on freecampsites.net. OK place to stay a couple of nights. Can walk up the hill for good 360 deg view. Lots of dirt paths into the camping areas but very busy. Some are rough, some are narrow, but a few wide enough for our 39' fifth wheel. Would not try in the rain. Lots of broken glass scattered around and some trash and abandoned tents and mattresses, etc. Road noise from highway but location near town was good. West side of hill is very crowded (too crowded for us) but East side is more spread out. Would stay here again pending weather.

Nice site but watch the 14 day limit

Had an overall good time staying here, though there’s lots of trash and broken glass all over the place. Overall safe vibe, there’s a BLM Ranger in a Jeep that drives through the area quite frequently. I saw lots of people that were staying in tents and looked homeless, so my wife and I decided there’s no way the ranger would check us, we figured he’d just single out the people in the tents. Boy we were wrong!. We decided to delay heading to Utah and just stay here for a what we planned on being a month. Well after 19 days the ranger came by our tent and asked us how long we’d been there. I told him a week and figured there no way he’d know we were over our two weeks since we have a 5th wheel that costs over $100k. To my surprise the ranger showed us a picture of his phone of our rig dated the day after we’d arrived. It had GPS coordinates and a time stamp and everything on it! He told us he keeps track of every vehicle that comes in with pictures. I tried to argue with him about the homeless camps and he shut me down and said everybody was getting held to 14 days. I manned up and apologized for lying and came clean. I felt like a total ass and the ranger gave us a ticket and made us pack up and leave. It was totally my fault and we’d still come back but I definitely won’t try to pull one over on the blm again.

Stayed here on 11/20/19. Easy access, great location, plenty of spots. Only issues were some traffic noise (fairly busy road nearby), bright lights (from intersection), and since it is a quite popular spot and had just rained my site had a pretty strong smell of urine. People seemed friendly and were quiet.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAP!

Watch out for the ranger in the jeep that wants to be a COP. He will run your tags for the hell of it and find things to nail you with, if you are tent camping. Didn't see him do what he said, which was look at everyone's tags and run them all, BS. He singled us out because we were in a tent and car and the only ones like that, loads of other RVs. Pulled us over outside the BLM land and gave us a ticket for MODOT suspended registration, which we knew NOTHING about and then threated to impound our car and "make us homeless" and take the driver's license! I will never stay here again.

Stayed Thursday, April 11. Easy to find location. Lots of glass at some of the sites. There were 4-5 RVs when I stayed but the area is big enough people kept to themselves. There wouldn't be much privacy if the place is crowded. It was surprisingly quiet for being so close to civilization. Had great ATT coverage.

Large BLM camping area with tons of sites to choose from

Fantastic, large camping area at the base of Snyder Hill. The road in is a little rough, especially if it's been raining, but there are lots of sites to choose from, many with campfire rings! Better than you'd expect

Good spot. Looks to be some abandoned RVs but for an area where the sites are pretty close you can feel secluded and at least the night we were here the other campers turned off the loud music by 10 pm. Might want sleep mask and ear plugs for traffic noise and traffic lights. Not sure I'd stay 14 days but a night or 2 was very convenient

4/10 -4/22/2019 We stayed at Synder Hill BLM land for about a weeks half. It was clean quite at night. Those that had generators turned off at 10pm.. Forest Ranger, Border Patrol come thru twice a day. RVs and campers stayed a night or two. Some stayed longer. They followed the rules posted. Wal-Mart 15 minutes away. Gas just down the Ajo Hwy. Casino, Tucson museum close. 14day stay.. No water, hookups, restrooms, you pack in you pack out. You can hike the hill. Watch the wildlife class A,C,B room for all.

When I first got there I scoped the general area where GPS directs you to. It ‘s gross, not private and is filled with dog crap & broken glass. I didn’t want my dogs walking on all that so I drove up a couple 4WD roads and found a nice little secluded spot on the hill. So much better. There were many more spots like this and some you would be able to drive a trailer or camper to if you’re careful. It was suprised by the amount of police activity on the adjacent street. A few times in the night I heard police with excessive sirens but it was a Friday in a small town so I chocked it up to the local high school kids being chased. There must be a kennel nearby to where I was parked because dogs barked all night long. Overall, a good stay, it’s FREE and not to far off the interstate. I will be back.

Near or on Ajo Hwy and S San Jaoquin RD near Mountain Park (Saguaro National Park) dispersed camping, well patrolled by rangers, some fire pits, great sunrise or sunsets, hiking around cliff hill on land. Close to city, amenities, Pima Co Fairgrounds w laundry showers and a dump is about 17 miles.

OK. And Trashed.

As one of the reviewers below stated, there seems to be a couple of 'regulars' that stay on this land, disappearing in the morning and returning in the late afternoon. Aside from that, let me provide my two cents:
I stayed here for a number of days in an FJ Cruiser with a canopy for shade. Although there are some trees around providing shade, you'll want something that provides a decent amount of shade as the Tucson sun is very hot.
I drove and walked the entire park and discovered that there is broken glass EVERYWHERE especially up near the western-facing cliff. Speaking of the cliff, I would shy away from that area and not only because of the thousands of bottles which have been broken there, but also due to falling rock. Looking at the cliff you can tell it's highly unstable, and the cliff plateau is home to fallen cliff rock, so be careful.
The road noise, as mentioned in other reviews, it is constant but if you sleep inside then you'll hardly even notice it; I sleep inside my FJ with a small fan and I don't hear anything at all. If you're in a tent, this is something you may want to consider.
Sadly, because there are no bathrooms readily available, people without bathroom resources seem to use the land as a bathroom. When I arrived at my preferred location on the BLM property, I had to remove someone else's waste. Gross. You can drive around and find toilet paper hanging from trees which caught it via the wind, and you'll also find other people's trash and or unwanted items such as folding chairs - I've found two; obviously not taking them.. I'm not the trash man. Lucky for me I bring a rake with me wherever I go so I was able to cleanup my area, and leave it clean for the next person who hopefully won't trash it. Because of the human waste issue, there are numerous flies in the area and you'll find yourself telling them to get lost.
With the bad out of the way, while I was here I was able to engage with some wildlife such as rabbit, young red cardinals, doves, and even a Great Horned Owl 'whooo' I believe lives in an abandoned cave upon the cliffs. I did see a Sheriff roll through here one morning but the place is not well-patrolled. I do feel safe given all the traffic we are surrounded by, but it's not patrolled all that often to my knowledge leaving people with a sense of being disconnected from society.
I traveled to the Colossal Caves to see about camping there due to the higher elevations and the fact they offer water, but I found myself seeking the comforts of this area instead as their amenities are horrible on-site. Would I stay here again? Yes. But only if necessary,

Great free place to stay close to Tucson.

We stayed there for a week beginning March 22nd 2018 in our 42' class A towing our towed. Had little problem getting in and out, was nice and quiet and clean, people we met were friendly. We were parked close to the middle so we were far enough away from the highways the only time we heard the noise is when we were outside. It was nice and scenic with beautiful sunsets. We would definitely stay here again.

Can't beat free camping new Saguaro National Park!

Stayed Jan 2018. Was pretty crowded and tricky to find a place away from others, but that didn't bother us, we weren't too close for comfort. Everyone was very quiet and respectful. You can't miss the location, very popular. Great central location to check out both units of Saguaro NP and areas of Tuscon. There is a gas station nearby that we used the restroom at: Shell, 6255 W Ajo Hwy, Tucson, AZ 85735. Entrance was a little bumpy to get in, but take it slow, easy does it, and getting in with our passenger vehicle wasn't a problem.

Good boondocking close to Tucson (10 miles)

This is a nice area - lots of space.
Right now (Feb 2018) there is a lot of road work being done on 86 (Ajo Rd), so that's a bit of a drag. If be careful if it was very rainy - the dirt roads within the area look like they could get deeply muddy - judging by some of the ruts.

Looked unsafe in the rain

We didn't stay here... With a bit of rain and the road adjacent under construction we didn't see a solid way in. There was a small ditch around the area and lots of ruts and deep tread marks. Without the rain this likely would have been a convenient stop to get to the National Park.

We have stayed here several times over the years and enjoy the location close to Tucson. HEADS UP, we tried to get in December 2017 and the roads and ditches were all under construction and we could not get our 40 foot motorhome in. There were trailers, trucks, cars and vans that managed to cross and get in. Hopefully all will be accessible again in the near future.

It was fine for me for one night.
I an usually wary of staying in free sites that are close to urban centers but after having a drive around this site I found a place where I felt safe. Yeah, it was tucked up near some high-end rigs. The campground inhabitants were plenty and scattered in a very disorganized way. There were a few permanant-looking residents and yes, the entrances are in bad shape. All in all, I had a quiet night and went about my way the next morning. I was glad to have had a place to stay.

Great BLM Group Campground!

December 2017 This BLM campground is very nice. There do seem to be just a couple permanent residents here, but most are travelers. All of our neighbors were very friendly and quiet. The highway noise is pretty prominent, but it also makes this campground more safe in my opinion. There are so many sites and all kinds of different campers here - from tent campers to large class A's - and some sites even have fire rings. There are 4 different levels you can camp on and 3 different areas. Most entrances are pretty torn up from all the construction, but we noticed 2 that were flat enough to pull anything though, the rest need high clearance or just to scout ahead and watch your undercarriage. We felt very safe here, and there's so much to do around here too!

Our 5th day here at Snyder Hill BLM 14-Day stay area, it's a small BLM area but lots of spaces on both sides of hill, some garbage around but we picked it up around our area and noticed two other courteous rvers doing the same so looking good, there is road Construction going on but we just crossed over it to access BLM land like you would do at any business, it fills up fast on weekends and holidays. There is two free dump & fill locations close by.
Enjoy and please be a courteous RV'er and keep it clean protect our land and rights.

We are not actively seeking Wal-Marts, truckstops or other parking lots and will not be adding very many of these. There are enough Wal-Mart and truck stop directories out there already.
