Several tables and fire rings are located here, as well as a vault toilet. The access road is graveled.

Fort Stanton-Snowy River NCA has many opportunities for hiking, caving, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, visiting cultural and historic sites, picnicking, hunting, wildlife viewing, nature study, and photography.

The cave is inaccessible due to multi-year, nearly nationwide closure. Bats are dying due to White Nose Syndrome, and they think that people are spreading the disease.

Directions
From 380 west toward Capitan you turn left on to a gravel road (UNMARKED). If you hit 220 you have gone to far. When coming east out of Capitan toward Lincoln the gravel road is on your first right after 220. Follow the (UNMARKED) gravel road off of 380 less than a mile until you come to a Y. At the Y go left for the campground. *thanks for the directions, Raney

Great little campground for free

Great little place to camp for free with trees and hills. Also very nice outhouse and garbage cans and canopies with picnic tables at several sites. A little interesting getting level but those who carry leveling blocks would have it easier. AT&T service varies from site to site. We had 1-2 bars at our first site and 3-4 at our last. Stayed here 4 days in our van.

Stayed here in a Class B (RV). lambvan would stay here again.

Road way easy with Tesla model 3; car camped for 1 night on last Saturday night; stayed at the first spot. Still easy walk to vault toilet; only 1 other family so very quiet but windy.

Stayed here with a passenger vehicle and a tent. William would stay here again.

I usually camp among the cholla and saguaro on open BLM land, so this little camp was quite a luxury. Gravel roads, trash cans, covered picnic tables and a vault toilet? I'm getting spoiled! Very dark skies at night and no human noise as it's a couple miles off the main road.

Literally the only think keeping this from being my first 5-star rating is the lack of a water spigot. :-)

There are only 4 spots so availability can be hit-or-miss. First day I was here in early April (a tuesday) there was only one slot open. Today (wednesday) I am the only one here and 3 are open. I bet the weekend will be slammed.

Stayed here in a 19 foot-long Class B (RV). secessus would stay here again.

Nice campground. Here during my spring break, one other camper who left in the morning.
About 6 formal campsites, 4 with covered picnic tables. Most are pull-through. One is wheel chair accessible.
Super clean vault toilet. No water.
Good gravel road access.
Hiking trail begins near the first campsite.
Hitekhomeless' driving instructions are spot on.
Creek is .30 miles, going there now to see if there are any trout.
Connectivity: 4 of 5 bars on multi-carrier GlocalME wireless internet running at 24 Mbps download, 13 Mbps up, 59 milsec ping.(That's faster than my home internet!)

Stayed here in a Truck Camper (RV). walkstx would stay here again.

A nice little campground with okay scenery. The canyon blocks the view of the Capitan Mountains and the area consists mainly of scrub brush and brown grass.

There are a number of upsides, though.

1. It's free to stay up to 14 days if you like.

2. Three developed sites have coverings. As of this review, only two have picnic tables. I'm sure the story of the lost picnic table is an interesting one, being they're chained to concrete.

3. The vault toilet is hands down the cleanest I have seen and is maintained regularly.

4. There is water just three miles down the road at Rob Jagger Campground.

5. This site is close to essential shopping in the small town of Capitan.

6. The Verizon 4G is excellent.

If you've got solar and can store water, it's a great campground to hang out at for a week or more.

(The cave is closed indefinitely.)

Stayed here in a 18 foot-long Truck Camper (RV). Tyler22 would stay here again.

Easy access via a pretty brief gravel road. Peaceful and calm spot. No water but a vault toilet in excellent condition. Picnic tables and fire rings. We arrived at 4:30 on a Friday and there were two others there. Within 5 minutes, two more cars came through, so I could see this place filling up. Very good cell service with Verizon and ATT.

krupers would stay here again.

Stayed a few nights. Well maintained, clean bathroom, five sites, four have pavilions. Only two others camped at and one couple stayed one night. Some traffic through, but not bad. Pretty quiet and seems to be checked on/ maintained daily. Small town about five miles away ( water machine on side of gas station at other end of town). Very pretty views in the area.

Stayed a few nights. It was nice and private where we were. There are a few with tables and shade cover near the front with fire rings but we drove on the gravel roads further into the park. If you park 100 ft away from main gravel road you are fine. We found a nice area with a fire ring of rocks. A lot of shot gun shells everywhere. But we didn't see many other people around. It was a nice stay.

Ziggy would stay here again.

If you continue just up the road at the Y (left to the Cave campground) Keep right you will find a great boondocking site off to the left higher up the road. If you go too far you will come to a horse water and a turnaround. Has fire ring and room for big rig. No problem with our 38 ft 5er. We just camped here in a 38 ft 5th wheel for 10 days.

Stayed here in a 38 foot-long Fifth Wheel (RV). rbunge would stay here again.

Don't attempt to find this one at night, you'll be circling the Fort Stanton Snow Cave RCA area for hours in the dark.

Following the directions provided here and the PublicLands website, this trail area is either not maintained because the cave is closed, or just a really rough, confusing ride. We rode for a couple miles (one of the reviews posted here says "at the Y go left for the campground", we took the RIGHT and got lost) so tiny bit confusing. Eventually (after three miles and ascending a steep hill in our DIY campervan) we got to a grown over dirt road with VERY primitive pull outs and fire rings that look like they haven't been touched in years.).Not for big trailers, large RV's or big trucks.

If you drive past the sign for the SCRCA, and keep heading toward Fort Stanton, the Equestrian Park and Trail head will be on the left, and on the right is a CLOSED (8/13/15) campground and parking area.

This is a great little primitive campground! We wanted privacy and to be in the middle of nature and didn't need hook-ups. This is it! We first went to Rob Jaggers which is really just a parking lot and trail head. Not for us. The BLM host saved the day by telling us how to find this campground.

From 380 west toward Capitan you turn left on to a gravel road (UNMARKED). If you hit 220 you have gone to far. When coming east out of Capitan toward Lincoln the gravel road is on your first right after 220.

Follow th (UNMARKED) gravel road off of 380 less than a mile until you come to a Y. At the Y go left for the campground. We went left intially and we lost. When going left at the Y you come up on the campground immediately. There are 4-5 campsites, most with shelters, picnic tables and fire rings. The restroom was quite clean. There was no one there even on the evening of July 4th! The BLM host said no one ever comes up here. We loved it!
