A secluded box canyon six miles west of Socorro attracts mostly climbers, but is a pretty good spot for an RV overnight.

Some nice nearby spots

If bandwidth is needed, a not-too-bumpy side-track (near the cattle guard a few hundred feet from Hwy 60) goes up the hill from the other side, to a few clearings with fire rings people have made. Some traffic noise, but very good Verizon signal from there.

Quiet. Lots of stars.

Stayed here April 1st, 2022. Could easily accommodate more than 5 campers. Large flat parking lot. If you are going west, check out the VLA (Very Large Array). You will drive through it!

pretty, no signal

Pretty area, zero bars of TMO, V, or ATT. If I walked up the hill I got one unsteady bar of ATT. I needed a tiny bit of connectivity in the van so I moved after one night.
Washboard road leading in, which is one of my pet peeves. But there's a functional vault toilet so it gets and extra star for a total of three.

Fine place for a night on our way from White Sands to ABQ. Pit toilet and 3G Verizon reception. Several tent campers around. Nice walk in Box Canyon.

great spot for RV camping and climbing

really lovely spot. stayed there last night in our short bus that is towing our car. the road in was very easy to navigate and not too rocky. the place was entirely deserted during the night. in the afternoon (Saturday), there were many people rock climbing. felt very safe, clean, and most importantly quiet and BEAUTIFUL.

Ok so this spot was a bit sketchy in my opinion. It was around 8pm and a nice car pulls up, circles our vehicle and drives off. Probably someone trying to cheat on their spouse idk. Then it was around 11pm and we got woken up by mountain lions screaming. This was fine, we were in a van. But then what looks like a flashlight right next to the van shines on us. A little while later, a car drives down to the canyon and back up. It spooked us to say the least. We left and parked at the walmart. In retrospect, we think the car was a local or a hunter and they were making sure campers weren't down there with the mountain lions. But still, we didn't actually sleep here

Beautiful box canyon

Been here 3 days, very quiet, beautiful scenery. Rock climbers came for the weekend - interesting to watch them. AT&T phone service limited in canyon, but, accessible just a short walk to higher elevation. Gravel parking lot with several fire rings and a nice clean vault toilet. No trash pickup... "pack in - pack out"!

RVs are allowed! Gorgeous canyon!

After reading the reviews here, we were a little nervous about rangers telling us to leave. We called the local Socorro BLM office to make sure we can stay here in our 32 ft RV next to a fire ring and the woman who answered the phone was super friendly and said that is 100% allowed. I’m not sure why some reviews say no RVs, obviously it is ok! Beautiful spot and cool to watch the climbers!

Fine overnight spot. Full moon in box canyon was spectacular. Even some Verizon 3G signal.

There are no ATV trails in the area and the BLM does not allow vehicles off marked roads, so the activity listed for ATV trails is false. Also, much better camping 10 miles to the west in Water Canyon campground. Parking lot has flooded many times so watch for flash flooding and road to parking lot can get very slick and muddy during rain.

Whether you just need to know where to camp nearby or you want to plan a free camping road trip, we've got you covered. You can simply use your smart phone's GPS to find camping near you or even use our trip planner to plan your route from coast to coast.
Our community provides the best free camping information available. Free campgrounds can be hard to find. Freecampsites.net makes it easy. We give you a simple, map based search engine to find free and cheap camping areas. Community reviews and ratings provide you with up to date information and help you select the best camp site for your next camping trip.
This is a platform for sharing campgrounds and camp sites you have discovered. We are community driven, and while we will be adding many free camping spots, we hope that you will add some of your favorite camping places as well. By sharing camping information freely, we can all spend less time researching campgrounds, spend less money, and more time camping. If everyone contributes a few campsites, we'll all have more places to go camping.
Please come back and let us know what you find! User reviews help other campers decide on their next camping destination. The more information you have, the more informed your decisions.Whether you enjoy tent camping, car camping or RV camping, our goal is to help you find the best places to go camping. We believe that free camping areas are often the most beautiful and peaceful camp sites. Our focus is on public lands. You own these lands and you are entitled to use them. We especially like camping on Forest Service land, BLM (Bureau of Land Management) areas, WMA's (Wildlife Management Areas) and county or city parks. We hope you enjoy the same style of camping.
We are not actively seeking Wal-Marts, truckstops or other parking lots and will not be adding very many of these. There are enough Wal-Mart and truck stop directories out there already. However, if a member of the community finds one of these locations to be useful for overnight RV parking and creates an entry, we may approve the listing.

Very nice up on top.
I parked in the parking lot. Nice place but no reception. I was going to leave and pulled onto the flat parking spot on top. Where you first come in. I noticed trails going up the hill. Drove to the top and it was nice up there. All the bars on my phone. And you can walk over and look down at the climbers.
Stayed here in a 14 foot-long Trailer (RV).
