This place is Florida, or at least the Florida I grew up knowing. During my late teenage years, I visited this place weekly. There are lots of turkeys, eagles, deer, snakes, gators, and wild boar living in the area. It's very popular with hunters.

Mosquitoes!!

On Hwy 76, towards Indiantown, there is a mass burial graveyard of over 1,600 unidentified people who lost their lives in western Palm Beach County as the result of an unnamed Category 5 hurricane in September, 1928.

Camping is free by Special Use License (starting July 1st, 2016) at the Family campground, the Equestrian campground and the Group campsite (for groups of 20 or more only). All SULs at DuPuis are on a first come, first served basis. You may obtain an SUL online at the South Florida Water Management District website: http://my.sfwmd.gov/portal/page/portal/pg_grp_sul/pg_sul_main). You cannot camp if you do not have an SUL.

The DuPuis Management Area is closed for access during quota hunts specific times of the year. Please see the FWC hunting brochure for specific hunt closures: http://www.myfwc.com/hunting/wma-brochures/s/dupuis/ (the property is not closed during Small Game or Wild Hog-Still seasons). All other times we are open to the public for recreational activities.

Equestrian Campground
The equestrian campground is located at Gate 3 location. Camping with a tent or a recreational vehicle permitted. There are 40 Special Use Licenses available for the Equestrian campground. Primitive camping facilities include a shower, restrooms, 30 stalls and 15 paddocks. No water or electrical hook-up provided. There are no designated sites at the Equestrian campground. An RV sanitation dump station is also provided visit RVDumpSites.net for details.

Family Campground
Tent camping and popup campers only. You are not allowed to sleep in an vehicle or trailer. 14 Special Uses Licenses are available for the Family campground. They are issued on a first come, first served basis. Your SUL, secures a camping spot for you.

You can get to the family campground by entering DuPuis through Gate 1; this road is Jim Lake Grade. Tents and popup campers only. The sign for the Family Campground is approximately 1 mile down on the left side of the road. There are 16 campsites. At each campsite there is a picnic table and a fire ring. There is no potable water available and there are two composting toilets located at the campground.

There is a camphost on site year round

The DuPuis Management Area is a 21,875 acre multi-use natural area located in northwestern Palm Beach and southwestern Martin Counties. The property is interspersed with numerous ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, pine flatwoods, and remnant Everglades marsh. The area provides miles of hiking and horseback trails, an equestrian center, graded vehicle roads, backpack and group campsites, and seasonal hunting (There are scheduled hunt closures – These can be found on the SFWMD recreation page for the DuPuis property. There is a calendar with the hunt closure dates found here). DuPuis is far from urban areas, and its dark night sky lends itself to excellent star gazing.

At this site you can explore the Nature Center with interpretive displays, walk the nature trail and butterfly garden; fish from the partially covered pier; take a 15-mile, picnic or enjoy primitive group and family camping. There are 22 miles of hiking trails, including a segment of the Ocean to Lake Trail (part of the Florida National Scenic Trail), and an equestrian campground with 40 miles of horseback riding trails. Special Saturday programs are offered and will be listed on the DuPuis calendar. Learn about these by calling (561) 924-5310.

Prior to District acquisition in 1986, the property was a ranch for Dutch white-belted cattle, sheep and goats. By 2001, more than 6,500 acres of wetlands on DuPuis were restored through a three-step program. Land managers plugged old drainage ditches, repaired a levee at the southern boundary to restore former Everglades marsh and reconnected a portion of the flow from the adjacent J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area.

Archeological sites of early American Indians date to 500 B.C. Much later, the Seminole Indians used the DuPuis region as a refuge during the Seminole Indian War of 1835, but living on the land proved difficult. Hundreds of starving Indians were captured and sent to Oklahoma. The area became known as "The Hungryland."

For More Information: Call DuPuis at (561) 924-5310

Notes
On certain hunting days the DuPuis property is closed to general use, which means all uses except hunting. Such uses include the camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and fishing. However, the Nature Center is open for scheduled lectures and visiting hours even when the property is closed for general use. Please check the DuPuis calendar link below for scheduled hunting dates.

Dogs are allowed in the DuPuis Management Area and must be on a leash and under control of the owner at all times, strictly enforced. Please pick up pet waste and dispose of properly.

Make sure to have the right permit . Even tho equestrian permits gives you an option horse or no horse you must have a horse. Non equestrian permits are the actual right permit . Or family campground. The host was at first upset because we didn’t check in and no I didn’t read any signs , he was trying to make me understand I had the wrong permit . I thought he was being rude and just didn’t want me there but I didn’t read the updates ! Just get a non equestrian permit if ya want to stay here without a horse

This campground is a large field where you can pick any spot and is managed by the SW Florida Water Mgmt District. We were able to get a nice spot near the camp host that was perfect for solar. This is an equestrian campground, but there is a section for non-equestrian campers. You do have to get a permit (called a Special Use License) ahead of time to stay. It is a very easy process on the website https://www.sfwmd.gov/community-residents/recreation/sul. The approval will come within minutes. You don’t have to have the permit printed, but make sure you have electronic access to it to show it to the camp hosts. I also wrote the pertinent information on a sheet of paper to leave in the truck, but we never had it out and nobody asked about it. I believe the max stay is 8 days. Make sure you check the website for closures due to hunting and other reasons before you book. We stayed 5 nights in early January 2019.

There are no hook-ups at this camping area, but there is a dump station near the entrance and there are potable water spigots placed around the camping area. Upon arrival, the camp host informed us not to drink the water. I found that advice ironic since this is managed by the water district. There was a sign near the front of the campground that said the water was fine to drink and did not need to be boiled, but we heeded his advice and only used the water for showers and used bottled water to drink. It did have a sulfur smell and a tint to it.

The campground is at Gate 3. There is a gate with a chain at the entrance, but there is no lock. You just move the gate and close it behind you. Most of the area is level and like I said, you can pick anywhere to camp. There are several trees that provide good shade if you want that. We have solar so needed fully sun and were able to find a great spot for that. We didn’t check them out, but they do have restrooms and possible showers. Overall the campground was well maintained and there was no trash. It did get busy for the weekend with locals and got a bit louder, but overall it was nice and quiet. You are close to a highway that large dump trucks drive down so there is some road noise, but nothing too bad. It quiets down at night. There are several walking trails next to the campground and there is a driving nature trail at Gate 1 and more walking trails at Gate 2. The campground is also close to Lake Okeechobee.

We had no trouble with connectivity as we had 3-4 bars on Verizon and AT&T hotspots without booster. The camp host said there was a small town nearby, Indiantown, where you can get a few essentials and bottled water. We ended up going to Walmart because we needed specific items. There are several about 40 minutes away.

Overall it was a nice place to stay for a few days. Great service that the FL Water Mgmt District provides, and we are thankful for it. If ever in the area, we would stay here again.

Stayed here in a 30 foot-long Trailer (RV). Meandering Life would stay here again.

I spent 3 nights in the equestrian campground in a Promaster van. This is by far the nicest place I have ever stayed for free. It is not crowded and there are showers and flush toilets. Getting the permit online took less than 15 minutes. There are plenty of trees if you wish to park in the shade as well as spots in the sun if you prefer. The only downside to this place is that it is just off a busy blacktop road and you hear the traffic all day and night. Some people might be put off by this. However, this did not bother me in the least

Only stayed two days because there were no reservations available for the next days. It just takes 2 minutes to make the reservation online. Do expect to see the volunteer go around checking everybody's reservations and handing out a list of rules (just the usual). This is the most closely monitored free campground I've ever stayed at. But it is lovely. Where I was parked I got to see the horseback riders trotting along now and then out my window. There are no actual spots, you kind of just park anywhere you want. There were more RVs than tent campers. Perfect Verizon cell and internet. I use my own restroom, so I can't speak to that. I was baffled when I left, because for such a closely monitored camp, I was surprised that I didn't see a dumpster or trash can.

I stayed at the first gate camping area. Very secluded and quiet.

Its about a mile down a gravel road from the highway and you need a permit to unlock the gate. I found out there are actually 5 gates into the area including one to the office, one to an equestrian center, the one for the campers and one just for hikers. I don't know what the fifth one is for, but that is ok.

I was told there were alligators in the pond, but I never saw them. Lots of birds including egrets, chickadees, cardinals, woodpeckers, hawks and a belted kingfisher.

Beware Mosquito's at dusk!

Cindi hiked in and stayed here with a tent. Cindi would stay here again.

We stayed two nights, and loved it! The mosquitoes weren't bad at all, I was pleasantly surprised. There were some black flies during the day, but they mostly hovered over our canoe and car. The area is beautiful. Mostly treed canopy, with wild flowers. We did some hiking, the auto trail, and the visitor's center. Ben at the visitors center was very friendly and knowledgeable. We did not get a permit. The camp host came over as soon as we pulled in, confirmed our plans, and told us to keep our dog on a leash. Nice guy he has been there for a while. Large dumpster for trash is off to the side. Showers and bathrooms were clean. The only negative is significant road boise, as it is right off a fairly well trafficked road. Very pleasant site.

Reviewed April 9, 2016

Great place to camp if you can deal with bugs. Stayed four days. Hellish mosquitos at night, and you could nearly choke on the flies during the day. No trash cans; pack it all out. Firewood is sparse. Heard lots of animals, and an alligator lingered nearby during our stay. Lots of fish and turtles :) Hammock camped all 4 days.

Stayed here with a passenger vehicle and a tent. Jordy would stay here again.

We stayed at the Equestrian Campground (gate 3) for a month in February 2016 - leaving every 8 days for a night and then returning per the rules. Gate is closed but not locked - no reservations needed. Has onsite well water (potable but use a filter), dump station, restrooms, and shower. The camp host was very friendly. As other reviews mentioned mosquitoes, flies, and fire ants are prevalent however they were spraying for mosquitoes and fire ants while we were there. WMA staff says it should result in a huge reduction next year. Generator use is allowed between 7a-11p. Huge area with no predefined spaces was very nice. You just roll in and set up camp wherever you'd like. First come fist serve. We met some really nice folks while we stayed there. Lots of trails to walk/hike/bike at gates 1 & 2, there is a nature center up the road at gate 5. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

Stayed here in a 35 foot-long Class A + a Toad (RV). thelacroixboys would stay here again.

DuPuis was a wonderful find. Free camping, showers, bathrooms and plenty of walking trails with tangerine trees and rarely seen wildlife, such as Bald Eagle and its nest.

Please note that the Family Campground at gate 1 allows tents and popup campers only. This is not mentioned anywhere on the reserve webpage but there is a sign stating that at the entrance to the campground. Fortunately the Equestrian Campground at gate 3 is opened to anyone. The gate is closed but not locked.

Stayed here in February 2014. Nice large area and very friendly camp-host. Offers a lot of camping spots and availability was no problem for us. Site has toilets and showers (not the cleanest, but showers nonetheless). LOTS of mosquitoes! Also saw a lot of geckos near the restrooms, which was pretty cool. Did find a dumpster, but no dump-station/fresh water.

We got a late start on a January weekend jaunt, ended up getting to DuPuis around 9:30 pm and still had several sites to choose from. Small pond, fire rings, picnic tables, pit toilets. NO water or dumpster. Very nice free place to stay.

Thank God, there is a wilderness not far from home!
Where no human sounds can be heard, except for
an occasional airplane.

I stayed there for a night in August. I was the only camper there, so there was plenty of space. It is a very beautiful park. An auto-tour takes you down a 7 mile dirt road to a fishing pier and look-out tower. There are hiking trails and horse trails. You can camp there for as many as thirty days in a single year. I am set up to boon-dock and don't mind the heat. The staff at the visitors center is very helpful.

There are three campgrounds. The equestrian campground is the best equipped. The family campground has composting toilets, limited running water and electricity - no hookups and no showers. The family campground is restricted to tents and pop-up campers only. There is also a large group campsite that has two large pavilions and a composting toilet. You need to make reservations to get into there. The Family campground is first come first served. I don't know about the equestrian campground. There are also several other picnic areas for day use.

I have camped, fished, hiked and ridden my bicycle here for years. I really like the fact that I see so much wildlife and that it is so quiet and beautiful. It's nature at it's finest. I have an aging dog that I won't kennel now. He lies around doing nothing but isn't allowed here even tied-I won't be returning sadly, I'll miss it.

Did you have any trouble with availability at the family campground, it is a few hours from where I am driving... hate to get the family all psyched up then have to turn around.
