Thompson Grove is a picnic area in Rita Blanca National Grassland. There is plenty of shade from cottonwood trees in the picnic area. It is surrounded by nothing but prairie and sky otherwise.

Car camped here twice now on two different road trips. I felt very safe both times. It’s a Dirt parking lot surrounded by grassy picnic area, there’s quite a few trees around and feels very peaceful. If you come late May be prepared for the Moth swarms.. they were everywhere including my car, had to shake everything out. I had one bar of service (AT&T)

Stayed here with a passenger vehicle and a tent. hannahbanana would stay here again.

Well maintained. Pit toliet, nice cement tables on cemant pads. Grills and fire pits. Really not a camping spot. You park your RV in parking lot. Perfect for tent camping. Paved roads all but last last 1/2 mile. We love the quiet and don't need hookups, so this is almost perfect. The only reason not 5 stars is that we can't pull up next to picnic tables. It says 14 days.... so we'll see how long we stay. waiting for weather to warm up north. 28 miles from a Loves, where you can dump and get water. I will update with price if we use it.

Stayed here in a 22 foot-long Class B (RV). LucyKJ would stay here again.

Arrived Friday June 3 2022 about 3:00pm and stayed until June 6 2022.Campground is very well maintained. Vault toilet is very clean and had toilet paper. Has trash cans, picnic tables, fire rings, grills and large trees for some shade. No water, electric or hookups. There is a current burn ban. You can stay for 14 days. I was the only one here when I arrived. It was very quiet and peaceful. A thunderstorm did come through but only lasted about an hour. Listening to the birds was very relaxing. Gunner found a tortoise on one of our morning walks. On Saturday around noon a sheriff pulled in turned around and left. Two campers pulled I right before the sun went down. They left Sunday morning. Sunday evening two more campers pulled in before the sun went down. They was leaving as I was pulling out. Stayed in a pickup truck and tent. Will stay here again. At&t cell service was good.

I was originally planning to just stay overnight but after we arrived at Thompson Grove Picnic Ground, we liked it so much that we stayed for the weekend, from November 26th to 29th, 2021. We had a peaceful and quiet stay. One day we enjoyed watching cowboys herding cattle to a loading pen near to the picnic area. The dogs and I also enjoyed our walks on vehicle tracks through the grassland. At this time of the year there was not much activity, which gave us a private camping weekend. The picnic area has many tables, metal fire rings, metal grills, a horseshoe pit, animal proof trash receptacles and a double sided vault toilet. You can stay up to 14 days here.

Stayed here in a 23 foot-long Class B (RV). DogMan would stay here again.

I'm not sure why anyone would have anything negative to say about this place unless to detour people from coming and ruin this little free paradise ?

camp sites are set up good distance away from one another has picnic tables on concrete slabs place to build a fire and a little grill to cook on bathrooms are well maintained (little creepy since no lighting no water no place to wash hands no mirror to be vain in lol but it has toilet over a massive sewer in ground get nice little breeze among your behind and if your like me and have watched a fair share of scary movies it's super hard to do your buisness thinking a clowns going to poke you in the bootyhole) lol but other then the creepiness it's awesome clean and full of toilet paper better then squating in the woods and wiping your butt with poison ivy that's for sure.

days that the sky is clear and all other campers (if there are any have their lights off) you can see the milkyway and all the stars perfectly it's out in middle of nowhere but to me that makes for a wonderful time with the family ? since not a fan of people to begin with.

Definitely putting this down in the books for next time we are this way and need a place to rest.

Thank you whomever keeps up with this place was definitely a little blessing to find on our way home from Colorado this evening

It is still a nice place that is a little out of the way (good!).
It is as quiet as the consideration of the neighbors make it.
Still clean, well kept.
I arrived at 2:30AM PU pulling a utility trailer- just put a reclining lawn chair out to sleep on. Already there were two motorcycles (tent camping) and a pickup (tent camping). Quiet and peaceful.
A car pulling an camping trailer arrived at 3:30 and quietly set up.

Great place. Very quiet. Great place to tent camp. Clean Toilets, grills, trash cans, and picnic tables. It takes long back roads to get there, and it can be bumpy at times. But it was very peaceful with Lots of coyote howls at night. The grass was maintained. The only difficult part was when birdwatchers showed up at 4AM with 2 vehicles and a dog, and they began setting up their tent and emptying their cars at this time in the morning. These adults constantly went back and forth, opening and closing their car doors, talking, and allowing their dog to come near out tent and make noise. Beside their extreme rudeness...the place was very nice...when we were alone. The place is not big, so if others are there, you will be close by them.

Place was great! Restrooms were very clean and it was very quiet. There was a large rv there when we pulled in Tehran a truck came in around 3 and set up a tent to sleep in. The descriptions is a little deceptive as it is just one large dirt lot not individual camping spots. Also, it is about a 20-25 minute drive off the highway... just good to know. Peaceful place and a beautiful sunrise over the grasslands!

Great place to stay! lawn are cut, clean picnic tables, bathrooms are very clean for being vault toilets and stocked with toilet paper. has trash cans provided, No electricity/water but very clean area to stay for free! It was quiet, i was one of 2 campers there and the other camper was very nice and stayed a previous night before. Mostly quiet, i did hear what sound liked either someone coming into the campgrounds or possibly an air craft flying over? but other than that was very quiet. 14 days max to camp there, they do have a plaque situation going on (pls read the board when pulling into the camp grounds) just involves mices, rats, squirrels, and etc you want to stay away from getting bit. lots of flies in the afternoon but throughout the night they went away and morning time. would stay overnight again no problem, no traffic down the road. I usually don't give 5 stars to a campsite but this place definitely was nice and maintained.

Thompson Grove is one of my favorite sites. I live in Ft Worth TX and I almost always stop to sleep here on my way to Colorado. It doesn't have much to offer except: 1. Its proximity and convenience to US-87 (while still being and feeling very remote) 2. Completely FREE camping which is incredibly difficult to find in Texas and 3. Toilets, although they are simple pit toilets with no running water. 4. A giant pile of well-seasoned firewood waiting to be split.

It's a small grove of trees in the middle of one of the largest plains in the world. Very quiet. Very dark. I believe the other reviewer that there can be traffic during certain events but the handful of times I've been there I haven't seen or heard another soul.

Secret hint: the gate is open and you can drive to the woodpile to load firewood or into the trees to camp.

Stayed here in a 20 foot-long Passenger Vehicle. scooby7 would stay here again.

Quiet spot for a night time stopover

Reviewed July 11, 2016

The camp is about 20 miles from everything, in the middle of nowhere. It was quite peaceful at night, cool, breezy, and quiet except for the faint sound of machines and trucks on US87. It was a little eerie out there and I agree with a previous review that it's a bit of an odd place for a camp. It does have shade and nice fire pits, the trees and grass were green. I think the dead trees have been cut down but the stumps were just thrown in the grass at the edges of the grounds. Overall I'd consider this place quiet, good for a one night stopover. Try to avoid it during the day because the flies are very bothersome.

Stayed here in a 10 foot-long Truck Camper (RV). Philip would stay here again.

Lovely prairie location. Trees are maybe 70% dead, probably from drought. I was there in early September. Hot, dry, dusty, but worst was the flies. Unbearable. May breed in the shot-up trash cans. Too bad, because this is a nice, moderately remote location with tables (no shelter) and pit toilet. Great sunrises & sunsets.

I used to live there and am very surprised that this is considered a campsite. I actually stumbled on this comment while looking for free campsites in Texas. This campground is mostly used during XIT Rodeo and Reunion, which gets packed from all of the visitors and RV's/horse trailers. Another purpose is used for birthday parties and/or school functions, like picnicking. You will see a lot of traffic, too, from locals who live there taking a drive (high schoolers going for a cruise) around the lake. This makes it not ideal for camping unless you are okay with the traffic. Otherwise, there are trails around the lake to walk and beautiful, small canyons to look at. There is a small pond connected to the larger lake area in which fishing is allowed. I do not know whether the fish is edible, but it is something to do. Dalhart is also known for the wild, strong crosswinds in that area. I hope that helps anyone looking to camp in that area.
