Green Mountain National Forest
Sixteen hundred acres of the Forest set aside for recreation. Grout Pond is very popular for camping, hiking, canoeing, and fishing. It is open year-round and no camp fee is required, donations are accepted at the lower parking area bulletin board. Donations are utilized solely for Grout Pond Recreation Area. A Green Mountain National Forest campground host is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day to assist visitors and answer questions. Due to the high amount of use and the effects on the surrounding environment, camping is allowed in designated sites only. Please use pads and platforms provided. Campsites are available on a first come, first served basis.
There are 6 vehicle accessible campsites, an open day-use area, and a barrier-free vault toilet. Down near the parking area there are another barrier-free vault toilet, a hand pump for drinking water, a 200-foot boat portage with an unloading area, and 5 day-use picnic areas with grills. Each campsite has a picnic table, a tent platform or pad, and a fire ring. Plenty of hiking opportunities also exist with over 10 miles of trails, marked with blue diamonds.

Dear Madam,
The free camping there in the winter was great. You can walk the road at midnight under a full moon with the light reflecting off from it to see your way without a flashlight. An adventure for Christmas.
Grout Pond is not “free”. It is supported by donations. Please leave a donation and don’t abuse this privilege.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes it is totally safe, well as safe as primitive camping could be. I’ve been going up there for a couple years now and never had a problem. Only thing you might encounter are some animals!
I was hoping to visit the area this weekend (I am from Philadelphia). Is camping there permitted at this time of year in April, or does it not open until Memorial Day weekend as most places do?
Thanks for the help!! We have been having a difficult time finding campgrounds that are open this time of year
Hi Kristen,
Our records indicate that camping is ok in this area all year round. In fact, one of our users left a comment above stating how great winter camping is at this location.
