Dispersed camping provides a rustic alternative to established Florida State Park sites, which often include amenities such as shower facilities, electric hookups, and other modern conveniences. As with most dispersed campsites, those in Florida are most often found deep within nature conservation areas managed by the state or federal government. These primitive destinations appeal primarily to self-sufficient campers willing to rough it in the woods among diverse plant and animal species typical for the region.

Camping in Central Florida

The following list represents dispersed camping sites located inside national forests across Florida:

Ocala National Foresthas many opportunities for dispersed camping throughout its vast expanse. The forest spans over 632 square miles, with sections including the Big Scrub, Juniper Prairie, and Wekiva Sections, which allow visitors to enjoy beautiful views of the forest while camping in the great outdoors.

Apalachicola National Forest – This national forest consists of two separate sections spread over 543 square miles. There are several well-known recreational sites for dispersed camping, such as Tate’s Hell Panther Creek Unit and the Alligator Creek Unit. These units offer several amenities like picnic tables and grills, making them popular destinations during peak seasons.

Osceola National Forest – Located just west of Kissimmee, the Osceola National Forest is relatively smaller compared to other national forests in Florida at roughly 200,000 acres. However, it still provides several opportunities for dispersed camping through scenic drives that explore sinkholes, lakesides, and wetland habitats.

North Florida Dispersed Camping – free and inexpensive areas in North Florida. These areas include Apalachicola National Forests, Osceola National Forest, Northwest Florida Water Management District, Suwannee River Water Management District St. Johns River Water Management District, several Wildlife Management Areas, State Forests and a few quick overnight spots to park at retail locations.

South Florida Dispersed Camping – free and inexpensive areas in South Florida and the Everglades. These areas include National Parks, Wildlife Management Areas, State Forests and a few quick overnight spots to park at retail locations.

Permit requirements can vary for dispersed Florida camping areas depending on land management regulations set by local authorities responsible for ensuring the ecological balance of fragile habitats exists alongside human recreational pursuits.
