This is in review of a trip to Government Camp. My pup and I began our trip at Trillium Lake which is about an hour and a half east of Portland off I-84. It was easy enough to find and wasn't over crowded. We had no trouble finding a place to set our tents despite not making reservations. To camp was $10 a site and well worth it. The camp was clean, well maintained, access to bathrooms and water and very peaceful. There is a 3.5 easy trail around the lake.
On our drive back home we took an irresistible and unexpected detour to Tom Dick and Harry Mountain about ten or so miles headed west. As we are in good health Zo and I were able to spontaneously make the 3 mi trek to the top (abut 6 miles round trip). The trail head is right off the main road and does require a pass. Along the trail you will pass Mirror Lake and a small detour looping 2 mi around it that will lead you back on track to the summit. Mirror Lake also accommodates camping for $5 however there is no bathroom or access to water. I highly recommend this excursion of the Cascades for a weekend or extended trip.
